Hello...again

So it has been awhile since I've posted - sorry!  Our lives aren't super exciting so I never know what to wright about.  Lame excuse, I know.  So what's happened in the last month and a half...

I don't remember much from August.  I think it was just our normal schedule - work all day, church stuff all night.  Family dinners here and there, with occasional outtings with friends.  See?  Boring...  August wasn't anything special, and it was H O T.  Poor Darren...he had to work in the 115 degree weather every day.  He's amazing!  That could not have been fun.  Lets just say, he's glad it's cooler.  Still hot, but better!  Fall is in sight people =)

September has flown by.  The first weekend - Labor day weekend - Darren, Matt, and I took a trip to Vegas.  It had been WAY too long since we last visited his mom.  Sadly...I didn't take a single picture.  I need to work on that.  Anyway, it was a great weekend.  Saturday, we watched the BYU game at Darren's sister Jen's house.  They were able to bring Chris there so we watched it with her.  Saturday night we went bowling with some of Matt's buddies.  Sunday was a nice relaxing day with Shawn and his family.  Thanks Shawn and June for letting us stay there!

Monday was a great day.  For the first time since Chris's accident, she was brought back to their home on 7th St.  They brought her back, a few neighbors stopped by, she got to see Sheldon's garden, and we watched a movie.  After the movie was lunch, then we headed home.

It was a quick trip but a lot of fun!  This weekend is going be fun too.  Kauri, Darren's niece, is being baptized tomorrow.  So it'll be a Hunsaker filled weekend!  Lots of swimming and football is in sight =)

Well, that's the update.  Our life can be super exciting sometimes ;).  Things are going great and we're both still healthy and happy!  Hopefully it wont be a whole month before I post again.

(I have a fun trip planned for next weekend, I'll make sure to take pictures)

Build Our Own Testimonies

This year, because of Trek, Girls Camp was done on a ward basis.  I am so grateful to ALL my advisers, counselors, and camp directors for making Girls Camp a HUGE SUCCESS!  Our camp site was perfect!  The weather...PERFECT!  It was a great week.
At camp, we had 5 amazingly comfortable hammocks to relax on.  They also made for some hilarious times.  So many girls flipped over in the hammocks!
But besides falling in the hammocks, they  made for a great nap place.
Darren was in heaven =)
We had a blast playing games
And just spending time and getting to know each other.  I love how much better I know each girl now.  Girls camp was a great bonding experience!
The first night was filled with so many fun activities!  First, a couple of the girls and leaders played the..Fruit Game?  Not sure of the name, but it was hilarious!  You couldn't show your teeth.  At one point, both Peggy Braegger and Dawson had tears streaming down their faces.  Priceless!
Also the first night, the girls played Ooga Booga.  Now, I won't go into detail about Ooga Booga (you can't know until you 'know'), but I was raised on this game.  We played it with everyone, and my mom was always the Ooga Booga Queen.  She is great at it...but I must say, these girls take the cake!  I was in tears laughing!  They did such a WONDERFUL job!
After the Fruit Game and Ooga Booga came Snipe Hunting!  Now, I don't really have pictures of this (Snipes don't like the light).  But let me tell you, my YCL's did a fantastic job!  I've never seen so much work put into Snipe Hunting, it was priceless.
Wednesday was our hike and lake swim.  After that, we had a craft and spa day.  That night, skits!
Thursday was a BLAST!  In the morning, we made survival bracelets and wrote letters to the military.  We also got our workout in with some Zumba, the girls rocked it.  Thursday afternoon was water day.  We had a number of water activities, then Bishop and his wife got there.  They got SOAKED!
Great picture, Bishop gettin' the girls back!  He came prepared with his Super Soaker.
Girls camp was a blast and I loved getting to spend time with all my girls and my husband.  He was there all week and was a big help =)
We have a wonderful ward =)
Thanks, girls, for a great week!

Leading up to camp...

What a crazy summer it has been!  I can't believe July is nearly over...  Summer has just flown by.  And it has been a busy busy month.

Before, I blog about Girls Camp, something happened two weeks ago that helped shape girls camp into what it was.

Being the young women president, I am over nearly 40 girls, from 12-18.  But as the president, my main focus is the 16-18 year olds.  It has been a work in progress, but since I got called, I've been trying to get to know each girl.  It's hard because I'm never really with the younger ones.  Before this month, I could name each girl, maybe give some information, but not much else.  But after the last 3 weeks, that has changed.  I feel like I have really gotten to know my 40 girls really well (well, those that let me..)

2 1/2 weeks ago, on July 1st, one of my beautiful Beehives, Whitney Smith, died in a boating accident.  She was in Kansas on family vacation when it happened.  She was an amazing young women with an incredible testimony.  Her death was tragic, but gave my young women a wonderful opportunity to grow together as friends and a ward family.  The day after this happened, I invited all the YW to my home to talk about what happened.  A lot of tears were shed, but I believe it really helped.  This allowed them each to talk about Whitney and share fond memories.  It also gave them a chance to ask questions.  Why did it happen to her?  What happens now?  That night was the beginning of a great bond between my YW.

Whitney's funeral was on Thursday the 7th.  My amazing young women sang a beautiful song titled "Valiant Faith" for Whitney.  They all made it through the song too =).  It was a wonderful service.  Whitney will be forever missed.

As tragic as Whitney's death was, I have seen it change many lives for the better.  Whitney was a very strong young woman and a wonderful example to all her friends.  She had a testimony of the gospel like you wouldn't believe, and she let it show.  It is that testimony that has strengthened my girls as well.  I know for a fact that each one of my YW's testimonies have grown from this experience.  They have also grown to have a better love for each other.  They have learned to be more kind...more patient...and more loving.  All from the exmample of that 13 year old girl.

Heavenly Father has a plan.  He knows what He's doing.  I don't think it was coincidence that girls camp was a week and a half after Whitney's death.  I believe it was the perfect time to hold camp.  It was a wonderful time for the rest of the girls to come together and lift each other up.  Many friendships have been formed these last 3 weeks and all because of Whitney.
Whitney Smith will not soon be forgotten.  She has left a mark in the lives of many and for that I am grateful.

Trek 2011

Disclaimer - This is a LONG post.  Don't feel obligated to read it, it's mostly just so I have the Trek documented since I don't write in a journal.  There are pictures at the end if you want to skip to that =) I won't be offended!

Way back in August, Darren and I got a phone call from the stake asking if they could meet with us one Wednesday evening.  Now...this was recently after Darren and I both had been called to YM & YWs, but slightly before my "promotion" to YW President.  So the few days before our appointment, we were brainstorming all that it could be.  Then it clicked...that following Sunday was the Trek Kickoff Fireside.  Trek.  We were going to be asked to be Ma & Pa at our Stake's Trek.

This idea was exciting!  Neither Darren nor I had ever have the opportunity to go on Trek.  Right away we both wanted to go, there was just Darren's business that might possibly hold us back.  So at that meeting with the Stake, sure enough, we got asked on trek.  And despite the fact that June is one of Darren's busiest times of the year, we agreed.  We knew everything would work out and it was an opportunity we shouldn't pass up.

A lot of planning went into this event.  Monthly Ma & Pa meetings on top of making sure my 19 YW going were set and ready.  Making sure they had their clothes, the parent letters, permission slips, buckets, tin cups, all that.  In fact, I was helping get the youth ready up until the night before trek!  It was a whirlwind of a few months, but worth it.

So...now it's officially Trek time.  June 7th has arrived!  Darren and I were way excited, but to tell you the truth, I was somewhat nervous.  Ma Hunsaker?  I'm not a Ma!  We were the only couple without kids of our own.  We were new to the parenting world.  We got to the campsite and a few hours later, the youth arrived.  We didn't have any kids from our ward in our family, which I assumed would be the case.  But boy did we have a great family!  I did not hear one complaint all week long.  And they all pulled, or shall I say pushed, their weigh with the handcart.

The first day we pulled 11 miles.  The first 4, I think, were the worst of the entire week.  To be honest, a few hours in, I was thinking to myself "Why the heck did I agree to this...I want to go home...".  But I attempted to suck it up and kept going.  It got better tho!  Once we stopped the first day, we were all exhausted.  Let me tell you...Chili and cornbread have never tasted so good!  In fact, I don't even like cornbread!  But I ate it.  We all slept like babies that night.  And surprisingly we all were less sore in the morning!

The second day we walked 5 miles.  Yes, it was a shorter distance, but the terrain was a lot more difficult.  We were in canyons with BIG rocks.  At one point it was so steep and the rocks were so big, we had to turn the cart around and pull backwards so we wouldn't have a runaway cart and broken limbs from the big wheels.  The second day was also the Women's Pull.  For those that don't know what that is, it's where the men "go off to war" and the women are left to continue on alone.  Let me tell you...I had some TOUGH daughters.  It honestly wasn't that bad.  Yeah, it was hard, but do-able.  And a lot shorter than I thought it would be.  I was proud of my girls.

Once we hit 5 miles, we set up camp again.  Then the real fun started!  The rest of the day was filled with different activities such as hair washing, pioneer games, dancing, and candle making.  That night was the hoedown, and our kids picked up the dance way fast.  That was fun, even though we were all tired and ready to sleep.  One a side note, on this day, my allergies started to get bad.  My face was kinda red and rashy and it hurt to talk.  I was quiet a lot.  Also, my elbows were getting eczema.  Lovely, huh?

Friday morning was our last morning.  We were to pack up our handcart and head to 'base camp' about 5 miles away.  Again, I woke up with eyes swollen shut.  I was miserable and just wanted to be home.  Darren gave me a blessing, and then I was banned from walking.  You see, the first 2 miles that day were in 6 inches of sand.  That would not have helped the situation, so instead of walking those last 5 miles, my bishop drove me down to base camp.  A part of me wanted to finish it with my kids, but my allergies were so bad that it over-ruled what I wanted.  So my family finished the trek without me.  We just told our kids we were making it more authentic.  They had to bury their Ma on the trail and continue on with Pa.  Haha, in fact, they even made a little grave for me along the trail.  Somewhere there's a picture of Darren kneeling next to it - hopefully I'll get a hold of that sometime.

So that was our trek experience!  It was a wonderful time.  And if I wasn't allergic to camping, I would do it again in a heartbeat.  We really had a great time and learned and grew a lot.  And so did the youth!

My favorite part of the whole thing would have to be sharing this experience with my girls.  I had 19 YW participate and even though none of them were in my family, I saw them all the time.  I'd be walking around camp or just sitting on my bucket and I'd hear "Sister Hunsaker!"  I felt very loved.  I was glad I was able to be a part of their Trek and experience it with them.  My relationship with my girls grew a lot.  I love them!

Side note - My camera decided to die 2 hours into the Trek.  And when I say die... I don't mean I forgot to charge the battery or anything, I mean, it died.  Won't turn on...so here are some pictures I snapped before that happened.  Not many, I was kinda sad...

Darren and Bucky - love the suspenders =)
I did a lot of this that week.
Our 'kids' did an awesome job making our cart organized and compact!
Cart 11 out of 21.  Dead Middle!
Davina and myself!  So glad she came =)
Hunsaker Hobos, ready to go!!!
Gotta make sure you're snacking along the trail.  We walked a lot...

Trek 2011 was awesome =)

Day 20: A Hobby Of Yours

Sad that it has taken me so long to come up with a hobby of mine.  Even sadder...more sad...?  I still can't come up with one!  I guess I am hobby-less.  My days are spent at work, with the YW, and with Darren.  Can your husband be a hobby?

That being said, if I had more time for a hobby, and the resources, my hobby would for SURE be soccer.  I played soccer every year from age 5 till age 18.  And here I am at 22 and haven't kicked a soccer ball since who knows when.  One of these days I'll have to enroll in one of those indoor soccer teams.  Anyone with me?

Sad...I don't have a hobby...  What's your hobby?

Day 19: A Talent Of Yours

A talent of mine...well, my most favorite talent is illustrated below
Auntie Em & Blakers
I can put babies to sleep. I remember when Blake and Halle were little babies, at family dinners I'd walk around putting one to sleep, then I'd put the other to sleep.  And I love it!
Auntie Em & Rebekah
As you can see, I generally nap WITH the baby.  Makes it that much more fun!
Funny thing is, Darren has the same talent =) he's called the baby whisperer by his family!
I love putting babies to sleep...
